Dr Totten taught math at the Middle School level for 27 years in classes made up of a range of students from those challenged in math to those classified as gifted and talented. All are born with mathematical minds that need to be cultivated. "Math for Intelligent Students Parents Teachers" is a student paced approach to the branch of math called arithmetic usually covered in grades K-8. Each student or group proceeds at their level of ability. It may take 10 years or it might take two. It is suitable for classroom, home schooling, or small group settings. Any person, at any stage of their life, can read through the "mathual" and fill in any gaps in their background in arithmetic. An emphasis is placed on vocabulary, quick recall of addition and multiplication facts, and assistance in the four operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division in each area of arithmetic.If a person does not understand the unique vocabulary of math, anxiety is inevitable. If one struggles to remember basic facts, fatigue and frustration set in adding to anxiety. Skill in the four operations helps in using calculators or in the event a calculator isn't available. Many games, activities and exercises are provided to enhance skills in these areas and are helpful for individuals, families, or TOF's (Teams Of Four). Dr. Totten uses several acronyms in his teaching methods to help in the teaching and learning processes. One acronym is TOF for group work. Another is SCOOP - Student Creations Of Operational Procedures. Students create most of the drill exercises to increase confidence and math power. They enjoy creating rather than doing prepared pages of practice drills. Much emphasis is placed on helping students understand and enjoy the power of their minds as they progress through the mathual.One of the main emphases of the mathual is to reduce math anxiety and to enhance student's appreciation of their fantastic mental abilities.
