Synopsis

Life is a tale of two connected realities. One reality, physical matter, behaves in ways that seem fixed and unyielding. Physical matter can be defined and precisely measured. It follows natural laws that can be formulated and understood. The other reality, emptiness or spirit, has a fluid, yielding nature with no fixed edges or boundaries. Its laws are mysterious and impenetrable. We are citizens of both realities, though few of us travel back and forth. Most of us are happy to reside right here in the physical world, without serious thought concerning spiritual geographies. And yet, the time comes for each of us when we will have to renew our passports, which are set to expire somewhere after threescore years and ten (and sometimes many years before that).Because of our dual-citizenship, there is nothing to keep us from living right now in both realities. Our spiritual nature – pure consciousness or imperishable being – is who we are essentially and unchangeably, and cannot possibly be lost. The apostle Paul is reported to have said, “In [God] we live and move and have our being.” Consciousness, the womb of Oneness and Belovedness, is our source, our present reality, and our destination. Oneness is our original nature; all images of “otherness” are only temporary. The womb we are conceived in and swim in is filled with that unnameable Presence that holds everything together.A similar conception of “being” arises from Paul Tillich’s famous quote, “God is being itself, not a being.” We see God as Oneness, Belovedness, and Consciousness. As part of the Oneness, we share in that “being itself” – which is an imperishable reality. We will explore these ideas in more depth in the chapters and books that follow.
