Sam Dunlap was 42 years old when he made the decision to move his all-female family from the suburbs in Washington State, USA, and homestead the wilderness area of the Stikine River in British Columbia, Canada. His intent was to build a large cattle and horse ranch. When the 50 head of Hereford cows he had purchased did not reach the ranch, he was forced to search for them, even though winter was beginning to slide down out of the mountains. Three Indians agreed to help him search. Hanna, who had ideas of making Sam lover her; Silvertip, who had ideas for making Hanna love him, and Stick In Mud who was only interested in warmth and food. The search for the cattle quickly became a desperate attempt to survive the winter and was further complicated by the renegade, Hoonah, who thought Hanna should be his and that Sam Dunlap should be dead!
