Synopsis

Because My History Matters: Case Studies from the Studio for Southern California History documents the work of the Studio for Southern California History (Studio) and provides useful ways of envisioning history information. This book is both a textbook and a guide because it is a source of new information related to Southern California history gathered through our research projects, and it includes the steps to achieve some of the projects. The Studio is an organization dedicated to critically chronicling and sharing the region’s social history in order to foster sense of place. The Studio enacts its mission in various programming efforts, beginning with walking tours and interviewing individuals who have been referred to us, and later creating exhibits and publishing books. The Studio’s mission is about gathering history in addition to sharing information, so whenever possible our projects employ a participatory approach.
