This is the story of two young women, Millie Armor and Mirelle Delisle, both young and single. Millie is extremely beautiful, has no family, and is trying to make the grade as a cocktail lounge singer. She is ambitious enough about a career but what she really wants is to be married and have a home with her husband. She likes to cook. Mirelle runs a LP and hi-fi store called Delisle Audio, located in downtown Boston on Washington Street. It is owned by her father, William Delisle, a repulsive man and a terrible drunkard. Delisle has no interest in his children, the twins Mirelle and Lucien. Mirelle is breathtakingly in love with Jake Abremian, a young Harvard M.B.A. who is assisting the accountant Kenneth Dewar in an audit of Delisle Audio. The audit is one of the results of the collapse and bankruptcy of the Bunker Hill Studios, a recording company from Waltham which rented its equipment from Delisle. The bankruptcy was secretly arranged by Mr. Dewar and his long-time acquaintance Ellsworth Dodge, the President of the Salem and Mystic Bank.As part of the sorting the debris of Bunker Hill, Dodge acquires a “personal services” contract for Millie Armor. Dodge doesn’t know (or care) anything about singers and show-biz, but he wants to know what the contract is worth, if anything. So, he makes an appointment to visit Mr. Lance Yarko, the extremely successful Vice-President – Entertainment of the Orpheus Corporation of New York. His appearance in New York causes curiosity amounting to alarm. Yarko knows pretty well everything about Millie. Currently she is in Vegas fooling around with a Mafioso named Fabrizio Lucca. The President of Orpheus, Mr. Hi Greenberg, smells takeover. Why would anyone as powerful as Dodge notice a singer as obscure as Millie? He orders Yarko to keep his eyes open and his ear to the ground (avoiding grasshoppers, if possible). So Yarko meets Dodge and explains the contract. Dodge invites Yarko to Boston. Yarko sends a message to Millie through the grapevine ordering her to appear in Boston next week (details later). Millie gets there first; she is nothing if not intelligent. She manages to charm Dodge who decides to finance her. Yarko is both amused and interested and decides to take her career into his hands. Then follows a story of success and failure, of promise and disappointment.
