Zane Grey is considered the Father of the “Western”. He did not create the genre, but is given credit for popularizing these types of stories with the reading public. He is the one who created the formula and the stereotypes which nearly all “westerns” have used since. Yet, he never considered them to be “westerns”. To him they were romances, or romantic novels or romantic adventures that just happened to be set in the West. In a letter to his wife, Dolly, he asked her the question, “Where do I keep coming up with these romances?” At one time he was the third best-selling author of all time trailing only the Bible and the McGuffey Reader. He used this popularity to champion those things most important to him—the disgraceful treatment the wounded returning World War One veterans received from both the government and the populace; the despicable and horrible conditions the Native Americans suffered because of the reservation system; and the conservation of the natural beauty and the resources of America. His personality at times got him into trouble, as he said out loud what he thought when it came to critics of whatever kind whether it be his literary endeavors or when it concerned his fishing. When it came to either one he was an immensely proud man. But he didn’t need worry about the book critics. He had the reading public on his side. Still, his writing suffered at the hands of editors who often times removed the very heart and soul of his story. Thankfully Zane Grey’s work is being published as he wrote it in a series of unexpurgated books. This essay looks at these things, along with the author’s personal ratings of Zane Grey’s novels.
