Synopsis

Max Jacob was born in rural Brittany in 1875. He was a co-creator of Modernism, with other poets and artists like Picasso, Apollinaire, Modigliani and Gris, in Paris before and after the Great War. He incorporated direct quotation, quotidian thought, and fractured construction – Cubism – into his writing, especially his prose poems, an advance on the work of Baudelaire and Rimbaud. Prose poems from Le cornet à dés (A Cup of Dice), his most influential work, can easily be found in English translation, but not so his other poetry. This is a collection of fresh translations, some of them not otherwise available in English.
