The Toad and the Eagle was created by Marilyn Shea to encourage children’s understanding of the historical significance of the first raising of an American flag over a schoolhouse. This event took place in May 1812 on Catamount Hill in the town of Colrain, Massachusetts. The flag, made by Catamount Hill families, was raised in protest against the Federalists’ tolerance of the British practice of impressing American sailors into the Royal Navy. The book’s creative drawings and imaginative characters help us visualize what might have happened that day. The Catamount Hill Association, formed in 1875, is a non-profit educational and preservation association. Our members are descendants of the Catamount Hill settlers and others who have an interest in preserving the history of life on the Hill.
