Synopsis

Jesse is eleven when his parents die. He is placed in a Black welfare home where he learns to survive among those different from him. Eventually, he becomes a “spiritual” leader to the smaller children as he teaches them “to fly” so that they can join the circus of life and remain children forever. As some of them go missing, Jesse is confronted with Mrs. Duchamp, the director of the home. She wants her children to succeed in this society as lawyers, teachers, nurses and so on and sees Jesse as a threat to their welfare.Jesse is placed with several foster parents, but none of them work out as their view of the world has been corrupted by adulthood. Along the way, however, he encounters a few people who still cherish what is really important in life. Eventually, Jesse takes off alone on the road at the age of fourteen to get as far away from adults as he can get.
