Synopsis

FROM THE AUTHOR ON WHAT THE BOOK IS ABOUT.

This book’s major theme is that what makes us truly human, individually and collectively, is the integration of the star stuff of our bodies with the dream stuff of our souls. Its primary purpose is to bring into view the soul’s power to overcome the malignantly spreading fears, anger, mutual enmity, shamelessness, and hopelessness which singly and together are threatening not only our sense of community but our very survival as a species. From the perspective of ancient wisdom, this is a book about the transformational process of re-discovering and caring for the soul. In developing its chapters more specifically from the perspectives of philosophy, religion, and psychology,I have found myself increasingly in awe of just how multi-layered the idea of the soul really is, and of why no single approach to it is likely ever to fathom the fullness of its depth and meaning. Other inquirers, with different interests and ranges of knowledge than mine, will have other perspectives to share --- e.g., social and cultural anthropology, life sciences, the creative arts, cosmology --- about what it means to be human and whether an examination of the idea of the soul might be of help to uncovering more of their own humanness. Hopefully, this book will add to theirs in providing opportunities for readers to experience not only intellectual challenge and satisfaction but a renewed awareness and appreciation of the possibilities for personal and relational transformation.
