The Star Island Quilt Pattern features a traditional-style block made oversized for a more bold, modern feel. Eight points around the central star remind me of a lantern, fusing both natural and man-made forms of light. To me, this represents the intersection of the natural and developed worlds that we all experience, but that I think comes to a special intersection on an island where even the most sophisticated life is impacted by the tides and moods of the sea. The primary and secondary designs of the quilt also interact as the block features a star and the intersections of the blocks form a cross, much like a compass. Historically, island peoples used the stars for navigation. In our modern lives, this is a reminder that direction can often be found by reconnecting with the natural world, even via a simple walk through a local park. Finally, this quilt is an unabashed celebration of my love for summer, hot weather, and swimming.
