In the early 1940s, a loving father crafted a small blue wooden engine for his son, Christopher. The stories that this father, Reverend W. Awdry, made up to accompany this wonderful toy were first published in 1945. He continued to create new adventures and characters until 1972, when he retired from writing. Reverend Awdry died in 1997 at the age of 85.
C. Reginald Dalby (1904–1983) was the third illustrator of the Railway series by Reverend W. V. Awdry, the creator of Thomas the Tank Engine. Throughout his career, Dalby also published a book of his own, Tales of Flitterwick Harbour, and designed the trademark polar bear for the packaging of Fox’s Glacier Mints.
A classic Thomas & Friends story from 1948 starring James the Red Engine is now a sturdy board book for the youngest Thomas & Friends fans. Train-loving boys and girls ages 0 to 3 will be captivated by the classic illustrations, which perfectly capture the personalities of James and the engines in this adventure.
