While living in Brazil, I was often told by my English and American friends, that there was no book to assist them in acquiring the Portuguese language. I resolved to supply this want, as far as it was in my power to do so ;but circumstances prevented me from carrying out this purpose, until I came to the United States. The undertaking was one of considerable difficulty, owing to the almost total want of books for reference. But I endeavored to overcome all impediments by faithful labor and diligence, and am confident of the correctness of the rules as well as the appropriateness of the examples. Should the present volume fill, not unworthily, a long-felt vacuum; should it contribute, in however small a degree, toward extending the knowledge of the beautiful language of Camoens the rival ofT asso, the warrior-poet, I should consider my labors as more than compensated.
