MlOLO vPREFATORY NOTE HE purpose of this little book is to furnish a brief analysis of the social problem in Western civilization and to outline a scientific social philosophy which shall serve as a basis for a well-balanced progress. The present crisis in our civilization calls for a reconstruction of our social philosophy; for we cannot build anew the structure of Western society upon the inadequate bases of eighteenth and nineteenth century thought. The aim of the book is to indicate the direction which our social thinking must take if we are to avoid revolution, on the one hand, and reaction, on the other. It aims, in other words, to furnish a scientific basis for the progressive social movement; and it is commended to progressives, therefore, in whatever class, party or sect they may happen to find themselves.
