The social experiments of Australia have attracted considerable attention during recent years. They have been studied by men who have brought to their research a careful training in the social sciences. These studies have been particular in nature and have been analyses generally of the methods of arbitration and conciliation in vogue during the last quarter of a century. Few attempts have been made from within to submit the same field to social analysis, and fewer still to cover the whole social development of the country. Yet such an attempt is called for. The conditions present a unique opportunity to the sociologist. A homogeneous population, diversified enough racially to encourage variation, possessing a social inheritance of democratic institutions and ideals, living within a relatively rich territory, has worked out a unique and interesting experiment in democracy. Because its history has been short and its numbers few, the factors of its development can be analyzed, and the resulting trend of its political, economic and social institutions evaluated. With adequate scientific methods the task is feasible. In the use of such methods this work is an imperfect essay. Other reasons call for an attempt at social analysis and evaluation at the present time. A social cycle, rich in constructive legislation, seems to have reached its conclusion. The results of that legislation are available for examination. New forces of organization and leadership have come into existence, and the future of Australian democracy depends on them.
