Présentation de l'éditeur

These Lectures were delivered during theL ong Vacation of 1912, in Queen sC ollege, Oxford, under the auspices of theB oard for the Training of Missionaries, aB oard established by the Continuation Committee of theE dinburgh Missionary Conference held in 1910. The Lectures were prepared for students designated for work inC hina, and are, therefore, meant as an introduction to the three recognised religions of that country. While an endeavour has been made to give a reasonably full and accurate description, neither the time allotted nor the prerequisite knowledge of the subject on the part of most of the students justified an exhaustive treatment. Nevertheless, a certain amount of original research has been necessary. Our gradually increasing store of knowledge has been tapped, modern views and criticism considered, and a new method of presentation adopted. The Lectures are, therefore, published in the hope that they may be of value, not only as an introduction for beginners, but as a guide to those further advanced, and especially as an incentive to a fuller inquiry than has hitherto been possible.
