The author of this book has no desire to conceal the pride which he feels in having his name connected with a work so magnificent in point of art. It is not his fault if the portion for which he is himself answerable shall be thought vastly inferior to the pictorial he did not write with the pencil of Turner. On returning from a tour undertaken for the purpose of exploring the scenery of the Loire, he was for some time uncertain in what manner to arrange his materials. He knew that, with a history of France or England in his hand, he might, with the least possible trouble, concoct a book which should be far from uninteresting. This, however, would have been called a compilation, and, besides, would have possessed no novelty for the readers of history.
