The topic of awareness and control is an elephant in the room in sociolinguistic research. To what extent are speakers aware of sociolinguistic variables? Are there different types or levels of awareness? Is 'control' of these variables a conscious or unconscious process, or is it some combination of the two? Are the variables we are aware of necessarily those we control, and vice versa? The extent to which speakers are aware of sociolinguistic information and use it strategically may drastically affect our understanding of the role that sociolinguistic cues play in the development of structural categories. This volume constitutes the first concerted effort to understand the nature of awareness and control using all the methodological and theoretical tools at our disposal. The contributors employ a variety of perspectives to address the relationship between awareness and control in sociolinguistic research.

Babel, investigates a crucial yet often overlooked aspect in sociolinguistic studies: the relationship between speakers' awareness of sociolinguistic variables and their control over these variables. The book poses significant questions regarding the varying degrees of awareness speakers may have and whether control over these variables operates consciously, unconsciously, or through a mix of both. Additionally, it examines if the variables that speakers are aware of are inherently the same as those they manage. This volume represents the first collective endeavour to delve into the intricacies of awareness and control within the sociolinguistic context, utilising a variety of methodological and theoretical approaches. The contributors draw upon diverse perspectives to explore how the comprehension of sociolinguistic information and its strategic application by speakers can profoundly influence how sociolinguistic cues are understood in relation to the formation of structural categories. Through comprehensive analysis, Awareness and Control in Sociolinguistic Research aims to shed light on the pivotal roles awareness and control play in shaping linguistic behaviour, offering insights that could redefine our understanding of sociolinguistic dynamics. The book serves as an essential resource for researchers and scholars interested in the nuanced interplay between language, awareness, and social context. N° de réf. du vendeur Batch-FM734-VG-14744
