Studies are based on a Dissertation -- which the author submitted to the Special Board for Moral Sciences of the University of Cambridge, in 1900, and for which he was awarded a Certificate of Research certifying the work to be of Distinction as an original contribution to learning. The substance of the Dissertation has been considerably amplified in the following pages, which it is hoped may be of service in the elucidation of a rather obscure subject. The author gladly avails himself of this opportunity to acknowledge gratefully his indebtedness to Prof. James Sully, Prof. James Ward and Dr J. N. Keynes for their kind encouragement and help.
