New Edition, it becomes my painful duty I regret, to notice the death of the clear lamented author, the Very Eev. Father Maurel. He died on the 26th of Decembe 1874, after a short illness. Let us hope that his soul is now in the enjoyment of the beatific vision, free of suffering, by those Indulgences whose doctrine and use he so extensively and effectually propagated, and to which, no doubt, he was careful to have recourse. Eequiescat in pace. The numerous and valuable Approbations of the Cardinal, A rchbishops, and Bishops of I reland, prefixed to the present Edition, render prefatory remarks on my part superfluous, for they speak eloquently of the superior excellence of the Original and of the fidelity of the Translation, and, moreover show the high value that should be set upon Indulgences by the Faithful. I am deeply grateful to their lordships for the unreservedly kind manner in which they received and approved the English version, especially to my own beloved Bishop, whom I have the honour to venerate as a Superior, love as a father, and esteem as a dear, sincere friend.
