His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales is my excuse for writing this book. Some time ago just after the War I began to make a special study of the lives of the Princes of Wales, and I found it a most fascinating subject. It occurred to me that there might be many other people who would be interested in the careers of our Prince spredecessors if they had their stories in a convenient and readable form. I owe most of my information to the fine collection of historical works in the Royal Library at Windsor Castle, and if this volume gives the reader but a fraction of the pleasure which I have derived from compiling it, I shall be more than satisfied. I do not think that the portraits of the Princes have ever been collected and published in a volume before. To many people they will probably be the most interesting part of the book. Eighteen of the twenty are reproduced, by His Majesty sgracious permission, from engravings, prints and photographs in the collection of Royal Portraits in the Windsor Castle Library. I should like to express my gratitude to the Hon. J. W. Fortescue, the King s Librarian, and to Mr. Barry, Chief Assistant Librarian, for their kindness and courtesy. I am indebted to Mr. E. Kemp, Inventory Clerk and Photographer at Windsor Castle, for the trouble and care he has bestowed on the photographic reproductions of the pictures.
