Benton Family in their two -- trips to Labrador are based upon personal experiences. The story is, in large measure, a transcript of the writers own diary; but the characters described would never be identified, since, in most cases, their individualities are taken and combined from many people whom hemet in his numerous visits to that region, covering a period of thirteen years. The intention has been to present in a simple and natural way to young readers some knowledge of a comparatively unknown land, and yet the one first visited and peopled on the New Continent, the claim to its discovery having been disputed by the English, French, Welsh, I rish, I celanders, and Norsemen. The customs and habits in the Labrador are decidedly archaic remnants of the life of nearly three centuries ago; that is, the manners and customs of the people living in Labrador at the present time are quite similar to those which obtained in England and France in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.
