The book is a plea for African Americans to emigrate to Canada West (now Ontario) in order to escape the oppression and discrimination they faced in the United States. Shadd provides a detailed account of the moral, social, and political aspects of Canada West, including its laws, government, economy, and society. She also includes personal anecdotes and observations from her own experiences living in Canada West as a Black woman. The book serves as both a guide and a call to action for African Americans seeking a better life in a more equitable society.
