Synopsis

Notes on the Cross of Cong is a book written by Margaret Stokes and published in 1895. The book is a detailed study of the Cross of Cong, an ornate processional cross that was made in Ireland in the 12th century. The cross is known for its intricate decoration and its historical significance, as it was created to house a relic of the True Cross that was brought to Ireland by the Normans. Stokes' book provides a comprehensive analysis of the cross, examining its design, construction, and symbolism. She also explores the historical context in which the cross was created, discussing the religious and political influences that shaped its creation. The book includes detailed illustrations and photographs of the cross, as well as translations of the inscriptions that adorn it. Overall, Notes on the Cross of Cong is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the art and history of Ireland, as well as for scholars of medieval art and culture. It offers a fascinating glimpse into the religious and cultural traditions of Ireland in the Middle Ages, and sheds light on the intricate craftsmanship that went into creating one of Ireland's most treasured artifacts. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
