Synopsis

The Systematic or Imaginary Philosopher: A Comedy, In Five Acts (1800) is a play written by Joseph Buckeridge. The play is a satire of the philosophical and scientific theories that were popular during the 18th century. The main character, Mr. System, is a philosopher who believes that everything in the world can be explained through reason and logic. He is contrasted with Mr. Imaginary, a philosopher who believes in the power of imagination and creativity. The play follows their debates and arguments as they try to prove their respective theories. Along the way, the play also pokes fun at the pretentiousness and absurdity of some of the philosophical ideas of the time. The Systematic or Imaginary Philosopher is a witty and entertaining work that provides a window into the intellectual climate of the late 18th century. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
