Old English prose monuments of sentence-elements that express Purpose or Finality, viz. the Purpose Phrase and the Purpose Clause. The investigation of these will form Part I and Part II, respectively, of this paper. To this end, every occurrence of each phenomenon pertinent to the subject has been noted and either recorded under its proper category in the body of the work, or else relegated to the index-lists in the A ppendices. In addition, two charts have been inserted, one for the Purpose Phrase, the other for the Purpose Clause; these are designed to give in succinct form the actual numerical occurrence of each in its logical divisions, arranged with regard to authorship and chronology, in so far as these are determinable. It will be noticed also that the structure of the charts is in conformity with the topical sequence within the Part to which each is appended. The Latin original of the translations has been observed, and has been recorded in those cases where it would be at all elucidative of the question under discussion.
