My dear Nephew, In dedicating these pages to you as the head of our family, I do not feel it incumbent upon me to offer any apology for the manner in which they have been drawn up; as they have not been written with a view to anything beyond a faithful account of those things to which they relate; and, since they are only intended for private distribution among those whom the subject is likely to interest, I need hardly suggest excuses for the so-called weakness of a certain degree of pride in being conscious of the advantages of good birth, and so recording it.
