Celegrapb Secondary Cell I nstallations. Crown 8T0, 192 pages, 100 I lliutratioiu. Price, in Cloth, 26; post free, 2a. A practicalqI RA4i the charqinq and MANAGEMENT OF SMALL ACCUMULATORS. By Mr. ARTHUR CROTCH, of tke EA gineer-iA- Ckief t Department, G.P.O., London. Mr. Crotch, who it a eilver medalist and hononrsman in Telegraphy, and hononrsmaa in Telephony, City and Guilds of London I nstitute, in his Preface, says: To describe an installation of secondary cells a great deal more is required than merely to treat of the battery itself. Given the latter, the question of charging immediately arises. If a public supply of continuous current at a low voltage be available, the cells will be charged direct If the voltage be unsuitable, a dynamo vrill be necessary, and a motor may be interposed to drive it Hence the student is told something of both dynamo and motor. A gain, if the public supply be altemating Single or polyphase some elementary exptanation of alternators, and induction motors, and of alternating currents generally, will be welcome. Having tr ited of continuous current transformers, the static transformer naturally falls within the purview. Hence I traverse, broadly and simply, the whole field of generators and motors, direct and alternating current, together ivith the accessories involved voltmeters, ammeters, automatic cut-outs, etc., etc. As to the accumulators themselves, I deal in a simple manner with the principles involved, and describe the main types in use in the telegraph service, including practical details of the running oi charging plant, the treatment and behaviour of the cells.
