It is the aim of this work to present to the medical student and the general practitioner the essential aspects of mental disease as they have appeared to the authors. It is hoped that it will be found to give an intelligible, up-to-date statement of the leading facts, and one that will be serviceable to those who may not be able to give the time for any more exhaustive studv. Psychiatry is a large subject, and it is impossible for every one even approximately to master its details; but no graduate in medicine should be unacquainted with its rudimentary data as a part of his professional equipment. The work is intended as a handy manual for students; therefore elaborate case records and pathologic details, as well as discussions of speculative and controverted questions, are necessarily omitted. To make it the more practical and useful, certain special features are included, such as the mention of the forms of insanity not usually met with in hospitals for the insane, a comparative table of classification, and a chapter on some of the ethical questions relating to insanity as they may arise in the practice of medicine. It is believed that these features will be found to add to the value of the work to the student and general practitioner. We are under obligations to Drs. James C. Gill and Geo. W.
