The whole result was one king beheaded and another driven from his throne to die in exile. On the Continent of Europe the seventeenth century witnessed the emancipation of North Germany from the sway of the Holy Roman Empire. I ts first half saw the Thirty Years War, illuminated by the genius of Gustav A dolf and made splendid by his heroic virtues.
