The position of a place on the earths surface is given in terms of latitude and longitude. 31. Latitude is distance north or south of theE quator, expressed in degrees, minutes, and seconds. Places north of theE quator are said to be in north latitude ;those south of theE quator, in south latitude. 82. Latitude is reckoned from theE quator toward the poles. A place on theE quator is in lat. 0; the latitude of theN orth Pole is 90 N.; of theS outh Pole, 90 S. around the earth. Pltkes east of this meridian are in east longitude; those west of it, in west longitude. 37. The figures at the top of the maps in this book indicate longitude reckoned from Greenwich. On maps of the hemispheres, the degrees of longitude are usiially shown on theE quator. 38. Certain circles used in geography, mark the position of the suns rays, at certain times. They are called astronomical circles. 39. The axis of the earth is not perpendicular to the plane of its orbit, but is inclined 23 degrees from the perpendicular. Therefore, when theN orth Pole leans toward the sun, as shown in diagram 1, the rays of the sun will illuminate the earth 23 degrees beyond theN orth Pole. Diagram 1. Degrees of latitude are shown by the figures at the sides of the maps. A degree of latitude is about 69.2 miles, in length. 34. Longitude is distance east or west from a given meridian, expressed in degrees (), minutes (), and seconds (). This given meridian is called a prime meridian, 35. The prime mridiariy adopted by nearly every nation, is the meridian passing through Q-reenwich (grfin Xj), near London, England. 3
