The following pages have been arranged for students in engineering who have had a previous course in orthographic projection, but have not yet become acquainted with simple machine elements. A knowledge of mechanics of materials is not necessary for making the calculations noris it necessary to have studied mechanics or mechanism. The course as outlined is not for home study wdthout an instructor. Short talks at the blackboard are recommended as being of value in presenting concisely the most important facts in each lesson. Detailed instructions are omitted in many cases to give the instructor an opportunity to vary the assignments to suit individual students. The time required for the drawing and calculations covering nearly all of the matter in these pages will be about 180 to 200 hours. The test questions have been taken from test and examination papers given by the author to classes for the last ten years and offer no great difficulty to students who have studied the preceding pages.
