In llw earlier years of my ministry I often felt a wish that some one would collect and preserve the leading facts connected with the introduction of Protestant Christianity into Mississippi and th Southwest, as a starting point for the fature ecclesiastical historian of our country; but I wished in vain, until more than a half century of my life helapsed. What made it still more desirable that some one competent and trustworthy should undertake the task was the fact, that nearly all the actors in, and cotemi Tporaries of, the scenes to be narrated were dead, and hence the few fugitive pieces that appeared in the -religious periodicals of the different Churches being %written mostly by persons only transiently in the country wore exceedingly meager and erroneous.
