Présentation de l'éditeur

Preface. That children may read well that is, intelligently, distinctly, and naturally they must thoroughly understand the piece selected ;they must be interested; and they must give due attention to the mechanism of speech, and familiarize themselves with varieties of context. In directing children toward a proper study of their reading-lessons, the teacher should aim froyrt the oidset to make them rely upon themselves; otherwise, when there is no teacher at hand to remove or solve all difficulties their reading matter will be as unmeaning words to them. Cultivate that love of honest eflfort and research which is the groundwork of all true culture. One lesson well understood is better than a hundred carelessly read. Blurred, half-formed mental pictures of what the pupil is reading, tend to make him superficial and inexact in all his studies. The pupils should answer all the questions in the Preparatory Study. The general aim of tiese questions is to explain the lesson ;but they might be classified, under the heads of Elocution, Etymology, Orammar, and Omiposition, Elocution is made practical: first, by asking questions which help the children to imagine the different scenes in the lesson ;secmidly, by requiring pupils to use the tones necessary to indicate the various emotions and situations represented in the reading-matter; thirdly, by gradually evolving the idea of emphasis, so that pupils shall discover for themselves the emphatic words. In addition, the teacher should drill the class on the words in the I ntroduction, that constant practice may insure distinct articulation.
