This volume, the third of the series, is designed for use in the higher grammar grades. It contains a brief and somewhat more mature treatment of topics covered by the first two books, and a thorough course in the more advanced subjects taught in the upper classes. The aim has been to secure in pupils a high degree of facility and accuracy in computation, to develop the power of visualization, and to cultivate a habit of reliance upon independent thought, rather than upon rules and formulas, in obtaining results. The attention of teachers is especially directed to the plan of developing the basal ideas of each new topic by means of oral exercises, thus insuring appreciation of the new idea in advance of the conventional form of computation.
