This little book is an expansion and rearrangement of a course of lectures given by me in the United States Infantry and Cavalry School, and has been prepared for publication in its present form at the suggestion of Major John F. Morrison, General Staff, Senior Instructor Department of Military A rt, Army Service Schools. Possibly it may help, in a small way, to interest officers of other arms in Field A rtillery, and thus strengthen the feeling of unity throughout the service. The books to which I have most frequently referred in collecting material are the following: Rouquerol: The Tactical Handling of Quick-F iring Field A rtillery. May: Field Artillery with theO therA rms. Hohenlohe: Letters on A rtillery. Rohne: DieT aktik derF eldartillerie fUr die Offiziere aller Waffen. Langlois: LA rtillerie deC ampagne enL iaison avec les autres A rmes. Culmann: Le Canon kT ir Rapide dans laB ataille. Layriz: Modeme Feldartillerie. Drill regulations, official and semi-official manuals of our own and other armies. Reports of American observers in Manchuria. Journal of the United States A rtillery. Rouquerol sand May sbooks are particularly recommended to those who care to read more on the subject. A mong the officers who have rendered me assistance, I wish to express especial obligation to Captain Dwight E. A ultman. Fifth Field A rtillery, and Captain Arthur L. Conger, Twenty-ninth I nfantry, who have aided me by advice and criticism during the whole time that the manuscript was in preparation.
