The Engineers and the Price System is a book written by Thorstein Veblen that explores the role of engineers in the modern economy and their relationship with the price system. The book argues that engineers, who are responsible for designing and producing goods and services, have a unique perspective on the economy that is often overlooked by economists and other social scientists. Veblen argues that engineers are more concerned with the technical aspects of production than with the price or market value of their products, and that this perspective can provide valuable insights into the workings of the economy as a whole. The book also examines the role of the price system in the modern economy, arguing that it is often inefficient and can lead to waste and inefficiency in production. Overall, The Engineers and the Price System is a thought-provoking analysis of the modern economy and the role of engineers in shaping it.The Guardians of the Vested Interests...have allowed their own knowledge of this sinister state of things to unseat their common sense....they have gone in for a headlong policy of clamor and repression, to cover and suppress matters of fact and to shut off discussion and deliberation. And all the while the Guardians are also feverishly at work on a mobilization of such forces as may hopefully be counted on to ""keep the situation in hand"" (I love Veblen)This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. The following series of papers are reprinted from the Dial, where they appeared, from time to time, during 1919. They discuss the American industrial situation as it stood at that time, during the months immediately following the A rmistice; and more particularly certain difficulties involved in the industrial situation as it stood at that time. But, since then, no substantial change has taken effect in the state of industry, of such a character as to make this discussion less pertinent now than it was at the time these papers were first printed; indeed, the difficulties involved in or arising out of the industrial situation have only come forward into fuller bearing since then. Therefore, these papers are here reprinted without change.

One of the great thinkers of the early 20th century, American economist and sociologist THORSTEIN BUNDE VEBLEN (1857-1929) is best remembered for coining the phrase "conspicuous consumption." But he also, in this 1921 volume, foresaw the rise of the scientist and the technologist as an economic power. Here, he explains the conflict between the entrepreneur and the engineer . the new power of the technological craftsman in the industrial scheme . why any "revolution" in America would come from organized labor and more, ALSO FROM COSIMO: Veblen's The Vested Interests and the Common Man, The Theory of Business Enterprise, Imperial Germany and the Industrial Revolution, An Inquiry into the Nature of Peace and the Terms of Its Perpetuation, and The Instinct of Workmanship and the State of the Industrial Arts.
