Now we have philosophers who want at the same time to know and to feel !I fwe allow man to do this, he will quickly escape us !T his is a profound satire on the vast majority of philosophers, with whom feeling and knowledge have hitherto played a mutually unfortunate game of cross purposes. The inference is, however, true; and this necessary union of the head and heart among philosophers and original thinkers is evidently in a state of progression. tk Knowledge, says Hazlitt, springs from the head ;wisdom from the heart. The heart is the most central of all things. With this view of the increasing sympathy between the noblest of the human faculties, we must associate the gradual acceptance of the position now sought to be established, as to the secondary qualities of analysis, and its utter inefficiency, alone, for the attainment of an enlarged judgment and spiritual estimate of the full scope of intellectual works. No detached chapters, no detached stanzas, no detached scenes, no detached foregrounds, no detached limbs, with all the foolish or acute analysis that may be exercised in their separation, can convey a just estimate of the history, treatise, poem, drama, picture, or sculpture, thus erroneously mutilated for the purposes of what now passes as criticism. In physical things, analysis can separate with ease, even when no earthly power can re-unite the thing separated.
