The play is set in the aftermath of the Seven Years' War and tells the story of Minna von Barnhelm, a young widow who is searching for her fianc�����, Franz von Tellheim, a former Prussian officer who has fallen on hard times. Along the way, Minna meets several characters, including a wealthy merchant named Werner, who becomes infatuated with her, and a soldier named Major von Tellheim, who is suffering from PTSD and is believed to be Franz's brother. As the story unfolds, Minna's determination to find Franz is tested by the various obstacles she encounters, including social class differences and the prejudices of those around her. His work with the leading German acting companies of the day resulted in three major plays, a large body of criticism, and an important contribution to dramatic theory--the Hamburgische Dramaturgie. His work was influential on the major authors that followed him, such as Schiller and Goethe, and his plays continue to be read and performed all over the German-speaking world to this day.
