The favorable reception accorded to The Service of Secui ity and Information by the Regular Army and the National Guard seems to render unnecessary any other preface to this little book than the statement that it is an abridgment of that work, presented in a portable form, and containing the main essentials of the larger book. The Service of Security and Information being a text-book at the U. S. Artillery School, the U. S. Infantry and Cavalry School, and the U. S. Cavalry and Light Artillery School, and being officially recognized as a standard in the examination of officers of the Army for promotion, the formations and methods herein set forth may be accepted as having the authority of official sanction. The author desires to express his obligations to First Lieutenant Rowland G. Hill, 20th I nfantry, for valuable assistance in the preparation of this abridgment. U. S.
