As the author proceeded in the composition of these pages, he became aware of some of the difficulties inherent in the material which he was attempting to use. It may be supposed that its weight and inflexibility were too much for his hand to fashion and combine into the harmonious unity of a narrative having life and movement, and the charm of interest, which can alone attend the fortunes of individuals. In committing these labors to the public, he has no wish to deprecate any criticism which they may challenge, as a work of art. He is quite aware that he is responsible, alike for the material selected and his method of dealing with it. Whatever fortune may attend him, he ventures to hope that, as sketches, of life, of men and things, at the capital, at the period immediately following the war, the importance of which has not been appreciated, with something of the color, spirit, and atmosphere of that time, his work may be found to possess much interest. A. G. K.
