Synopsis

The Diary of Henry Teonge: Chaplain on Board H.M.'s Ships Assistance, Bristol, and Royal Oak 1675-1679 is a historical account of the life and adventures of Henry Teonge, a chaplain serving on board several British naval ships during the late 17th century. The book is based on Teonge's personal diary, which he kept during his time at sea, and provides a fascinating glimpse into the daily life and routines of sailors during this era.The diary covers a period of four years, from 1675 to 1679, during which Teonge served on three different ships: the Assistance, the Bristol, and the Royal Oak. Throughout his travels, Teonge encountered a wide range of people and experienced many different cultures and customs, from the exotic ports of the Mediterranean to the rugged coastlines of England and Scotland. The book is divided into chapters that correspond to each of Teonge's voyages, and each chapter provides a detailed account of his experiences aboard the ship, including daily routines, meals, and interactions with other crew members. Teonge also provides vivid descriptions of the places he visited, including the sights, sounds, and smells of foreign ports. In addition to its historical value, The Diary of Henry Teonge is also a fascinating personal account of a man's experiences at sea, and provides a unique perspective on the challenges and rewards of life as a sailor during the 17th century. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.

Présentation de l'éditeur

First published in 1927. 'This diary is history' The Observer
This is the first complete published edition of Teonge's Diary. The edition of 1825, besides omitting several passages, contained many faulty transcriptions which have now been corrected for this edition. An intensely human document, enlivened with sketches of the people he met and places he visited, Teonge's Diary is one of the finest accounts of life on board ship in the seventeenth century. When not at sea, Henry Teonge's life was as a parson and this edition of his Diary includes a full inventory for his Parish, providing an excellent source of historical and social information on rural life in the late 1600s.
