Since the publication of the first edition of this Manual, in 1874, Anthropological Science has made such great advances that for some time past a second edition brought up to the requirements of the present time has been urgently required. The British Association for the Advancement of Science appointed aC ommittee to consider and report as to the best means of doing this. The Committee recommended that the work should be transferred to the Anthropological Institute of Great Britain and I reland. This recommendation was approved of by the A ssociation, and to assist in defraying the cost of publication it has made grants amounting to 70. A further sum of 10 was presented by the lateD r. Muirhead, of Cambuslang, Glasgow, towards this object. The Council of the Anthropological Institute having undertaken the publication of the work, appointed the two editors and aC ommittee of its members to prepare the new edition under its supervision. It has been found necessary to re-caat entirely the first part Anthropography owing to the great development of this branch of the science.
