Analysis of Ornament, Characteristics of Styles: An Introduction to the Study of the History of Ornamental Art is a comprehensive guide to the history of ornamental art. Written by Ralph Nicholson Wornum and first published in 1896, this book provides a detailed analysis of the characteristics of different styles of ornamentation throughout history, from ancient Egypt to the 19th century. The book is divided into two parts. The first part focuses on the analysis of ornament, examining the principles of design and the various elements of ornamentation, such as line, form, and color. Wornum also explores the symbolic and aesthetic significance of different types of ornamentation. The second part of the book is dedicated to the characteristics of styles, providing an overview of the major styles of ornamentation throughout history, including Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque. Wornum examines the key features of each style, such as their motifs, colors, and materials, and discusses their historical and cultural context.Throughout the book, Wornum provides numerous examples of ornamental art, including illustrations of architecture, furniture, textiles, and decorative objects. He also includes a glossary of terms and a bibliography for further reading.Overall, Analysis of Ornament, Characteristics of Styles is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of ornamental art, providing a thorough and insightful overview of the subject. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Sketch is prepared chiefly as an introductory guide to aid in the adoption of some ready system in the study of Ornament. Though illustrated ornamental works exist in great profusion, they are generally on special monuments and localities, or extending only over very limited periods of time: and being, further, mostly of a purely illustrative character, without analytical description of the parts, they fail to impress on the mind of the Student those elements which are the essential characteristics of the works, and distinguish their style. These characteristics, therefore, which are the very essence of the A rt, are to he apprehended only by dint of great labour in the comparison of many costly publications, which, until lately, have been generally inaccessible even to the metropolitan Student, But with access to such works, some systematic general guide is absolutely indispensable to enable the Student to acquire a sound apprehension of his subject, with moderate labour, and within a moderate time. The knowledge of ornamental style is, doubtless, most readily imparted in a course of lectures, in which, by numerous illustrations on a large scale, including occasionally the objects themselves, the peculiar features of each style can be at once pointed out, and fixed on the mind, through the facilities of immediate comparison.
