At about a mile distance from the northern gate on my left there was visible, at the edge of the great military plain, the Palace of Peterhofi, to which Napoleon had gone after viewing the city from the Sparrow Hills, and where he remained for two days in vain expectation of the authorities of Moscow coming out to him, as usual in similar circumstances, with the keys of the town a deputation of the conquered to the victor, to beg for clemency.
