""John Wellborn Root: A Study Of His Life And Work"" is a biography written by Harriet Monroe in 1896. The book chronicles the life and career of John Wellborn Root, a prominent American architect who lived from 1850 to 1891. Monroe delves into Root's early life and education, as well as his professional accomplishments and contributions to the world of architecture. The book also explores Root's partnership with fellow architect Daniel Burnham, with whom he designed many iconic buildings in Chicago and beyond. Through detailed analysis of Root's designs and projects, Monroe provides readers with a comprehensive understanding of the architect's creative process and design philosophy. The book is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of architecture, as well as those interested in the life and legacy of John Wellborn Root. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. President and Directors of theW orld sC olumbian Exposition, and especially the members of its Grounds and Buildings Committee; toM r. Daniel Hudson Burnham; toM r. Frederick Law Olmsted and Mr. John C. Olmsted ;to the editors of theN ew York Tribune ;and to the many other individuals who have permitted her to quote their utterances or writings, or have extended other courtesies expressive of sympathy with this work. The plan of the work, which confines the architectural review chiefly to one chapter, has made it impossible to place the drawings in direct relation to the text. They are distributed therefore through the book approximately in chronological order. Large commercial buildings prove stubborn subjects for illustration in little. The stern Monadnock, for example, so resists every effort to reduce its proportions effectively that in these pages no drawing of it has been attempted.
