Présentation de l'éditeur

They were written to furnish a friend, who was unable to examine the question for himself in more elaborate works, with an answer to the query in the title-page, and to place before him, in a plain and simple way, the chief reasons why that answer must be given. It was thought by some, to whose opinion deference was due, that they would be useful to others who were in the same position as the person to whom they were in the first instance addressed, and at their suggestion they are now given to the public. I may mention that the extracts from Harding quoted at p. 31 may be found in the Parker Society sedition of Jewel sworks, vol. iii. pp. 320-1, 334, c.; and that respecting the Council of Trent, quoted p. 34, in Waterworth swork on the subject.
