Emboldened by the success attending the publication of aM iller Prize (I nstitution of Civil Engineers) paper, on I ron Cylinder Bridge Piers, the author presents the following notes, the result of many years experience and some research, on concrete and works in concrete, in the hope that they may be found useful for ready reference. The author has especially written them to endeavour to assist those engaged upon works, and to supply the practical information required, and not to be obtained in so succinct a form; and has avoided a dissertation upon the history or manufacture of true or adulterated Portland cements, which subjects are of greater interest to the professor or manufacturer than to the engineer. As concrete is extensively used in submerged, or partly submerged structures, the author has devoted five chapters to the consideration of some of the different systems of construction of such works. In conclusion, he feels privileged in offering his acknowledgements to the authorities he has named and quoted. J. N. London, March
