Dr Macintosh sdesire for a preface to his book, I wish it to be understood that I come as a learner, and not as an expert on the subject which he has made his own by many years of intensive study. It i-a perfectly true that ever since I read John Hill Burton sromantic Scot A broad, sent into the world in its delightful roxburghe binding just sixty years ago, I have been intensely interested in those daring migrations! which our countrymen made to every country in Europe and, later on, to every corner of the world, the ardent genealogical pursuit of some particular family having led me into many bypaths untraversed by Burton. The reflex action of foreign countries, especially thai of France, on ourselves has been fascinating when expounded by a Michel, but this interaction has been far less studied. In particular the effect of the old Germany, after having been given an exaggerated importance by Carlyle, has suffered of recent years, owing to many causes, from underestimate. In the process, for which a thoroughly materialised Germany has had itself largely to blame, it has needed a good deal of courage to re-adjust the balance, but in taking his courage in both hands, and putting his intimate knowledge of German to use in revaluating it, Dr Macintosh confers a debt on readers who are anxious to get at the truth of things.
