Court, together with the British Minister, Sir William Hamilton, Lady Hamilton, and the other English in that City, to proceed to Palermo. LOKD NELSON, who was promoted to the rank of REAR-ADMIRAL OF THE KED, on the 14th of February 1799, continued at Palermo until May, during which period his Letters relate chiefly to the reduction of La Valetta, in Malta; to the appointment of Captain Sir Sidney Smith, the Joint-M inister at the Ottoman Porte, to, as he erroneously supposed, a separate command in Egypt; to the defence of Sicily; to the condition of Naples, (then in the hands of the French,) to which city he had sent several Ships under Captain Troubridge ;and to the conduct of the Barbary States. Intelligence having arrived on the 13th of May, that the French Fleet had passed the Straits of Gibraltar and was expected in Sicily, LORD NELSON collected all his Squadron from Naples and Malta, and proceeded off Maritiino ;but he returned to Palermo on the 29th of May. In June, he quitted the Vanguard for the Foudroyant, which had been sent out for his Flag; and, at the earnest request of the King of the Two Sicilies, he sailed on the 13th of that month for Naples, with the design of expelling the French forces and subduing the Neapolitan Eepublicans, having on board the Prince Royal, many Sicilian Officers, and a large body ofT
